New Guide: The Definitive List of Culture Fit Interview Questions for 2019

There are few things in this world I love more than announcing the publication of a new resource for companies. (Maybe those all too rare moments when I realize yes, I gambled and successfully picked a perfectly ripe avocado -- it's neither too hard, nor is it past its prime.)

And today, I am thrilled to share that IMPACT VP of Talent Natalie Davis -- one our longest-tenured employees -- has published her Definitive List of Culture Fit Interview Questions for 2019.

It's a thing of beauty...

What's Included in the Culture Fit Interview Questions Guide

What I always find so interesting about getting a chance to collaborate on projects like this is how much I learn about a topic. And, in many cases, I end up realizing that no, I don't know as much as I thought -- and hiring for culture fit is a perfect example of that knowledge gap.

For years, I've heard the term "culture fit" thrown around. My first experience with it was back in my days working at LivingSocial, when I learned we asked a "culture fit" interview question:

"If you could build a treehouse out of any nontraditional materials, what would it be and why?"

At the time, I couldn't really understand why we were asking the question. Yes, it might speak to someone's creativity, but it still felt like a superficial way of measuring whether or not someone was bought into who we were, as an organization, and what we valued.

(In case you were curious, my answer was pool noodles, so my "treehouse" would float.)

Well, after reading through the Culture Fit Interview Questions guide by Natalie, I finally feel vindicated in my initial gut instinct about that question. According to her, it's not a good question to ask to evaluate fit. And, unfortunately, it falls under an category of "culture-y" questions often asked in job interviews that, ultimately, tell you absolutely nothing.

In fact, my whole experience reading through Natalie's guide was littered with "a-ha!" moments like that for me, and I'm sure you'll have a few of your own when you read it, given how grossly misunderstood the topic of company culture is.

Here's what she covers:

  • What culture fit is (and isn't), what organizations often get wrong about culture fit, and why hiring for company culture fit is so important.

  • IMPACT's "learned this lesson the hard way" experience with hiring bad culture fit employees, and how we changed our hiring processes to effectively hire for fit.

  • How we help potential job applicants self-qualify and self-disqualify based on culture fit, before they ever talk to someone from our team.

  • How we screen for culture fit at every stage of the hiring process -- not just during the interviews themselves. (Yes, there are multiple interview stages.)

  • The specific types of culture fit interview questions we ask, as well as guidance on how you can tailor them to fit your organizational needs and industry.

  • The culture fit interview questions you shouldn't be asking -- either because they're irrelevant (cough, treehouse materials, cough), or because they're illegal. You'll probably be surprised as to which questions fall under the "illegal" umbrella.

  • And, finally, the benefits of having a team filled with employees who fit your company culture. Spoiler alert -- it took us a long time to get to this point (and a lot of hard work revamping our hiring processes), but it's pretty great.

What Else You Need to Know About the Culture Fit Interview Questions Guide

First, it's completely ungated, meaning you don't need to give us your email address to get all of the goodness. Of course, this is true of all of our guides -- Google Ads, Marketing Interview Questions, Online Community Management, How to Create a Content Style Guide, and so on.

The only time you ever need to give us your email address is if you decide you want a PDF copy to read later.

Otherwise, you can just bookmark the Culture Fit Interview Questions link as a reference you can come back to again and again -- which we recommend, as we update all of our guides periodically throughout the year for freshness, as industry changes and inspiration dictate.

So, what are you waiting for?

With record lows of unemployment, it's a job seeker's market right now -- meaning it's hard for companies to hire and retain the best talent. But between our Culture Fit Interview Questions and Marketing Interview Questions guides, you have all the tools you need at your fingertips to hire the rockstars you're looking for.
